Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, the son of one of the Indira Gandhi’s assassins, has won from the Faridkot Lok Seat in Punjab, according to CNN-News 18.

Khalsa contested the Lok Sabha elections from Faridkot as an Independent candidate.

Khalsa’s nearest rival was Karamjit Singh Anmol from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). As per the latest update from the Election Commission of India (ECI), Khalsa’s margin was around 70,000.

Khalsa is the son of Beant Singh, one of the bodyguards who shot and killed former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in retaliation to Operation Blue Star that she had authorised. The Operation Blue Star was a military operation to flush out terrorists from the Golden Temple complex led by Khalistani leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Satwant Singh was the other bodyguard who had shot Indira.

While Khalsa contested the polls as an Independent candidate, he was previously in Shiromani Akali Dal-Amritsar (SAD-A) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), according to The Indian Express.

This is also not the first time that he had contested polls. He had contested the Lok Sabha polls from Bhatinda in 2004 as a SAD-A candidate, from Bhadaur assembly seat in 2007 assembly elections, and from Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha seat in 2014 as a BSP candidate, as per the newspaper.

Khalsa is also not the first from his family to become a lawmaker. Previously, his mother Bimal Kaur Khalsa and grandfather Sucha Singh Khalsa became MPs from Ropar and Bathinda Lok Sabha seats on SAD-A tickets in 1989, according to the paper.
