Lok Sabha: Amit Shah tables amended bills to replace IPC, CrPC, Evidence Act

Three updated criminal law bills, which will replace the Indian Evidence Act, the CrPc, and the IPC, were introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The three legislation that the Lok Sabha had approved during the monsoon session of parliament were withdrawn by the Home Minister. The Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023 are the three modified criminal law legislation that Amit Shah has introduced in the Lok Sabha. According to Amit Shah, some revisions needed to be made, thus the legislation were withdrawn and three new ones were submitted. He stated that when the measures were reviewed by the Standing Committee, it was decided to introduce them again rather than make formal revisions. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congress politician, recommended that the measures be examined in further detail. Members would have time to review the legislation once they were reviewed by the Standing Committee, according to Amit Shah. He stated that he will respond to the legislation on Friday and that the debate would be resumed on Thursday. The Indian Evidence Act of 1872, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860 will all be superseded by the three legislation. The IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act are intended to be replaced, respectively, by the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill 2023.
