LC Goyal: What we know about India's new Home Secretary

The latest controversy swirling the the corridors of Rajpath is the sudden sacking of the Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami for allegedly trying to delay the arrest of Saradha scam accused and former Minister Matang Sinh. LC Goyal is a 1979-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, And according to the home ministry release his term will be for two years. The MHA released issued late on Wednesday night states, “the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of LC Goyal, IAS, secretary, department of rural development, ministry of rural development as home secretary, ministry of home affairs for a period of two years from the date of taking over charge as home secretary vice Anil Goswami.” The release also specified the terms of Anil Goswami’s “voluntary retirement” from service which would take place with immediate effect, completely waiving off the notice period. According to the Economic Times, his successor Goyal had earlier served in the Home Ministry as Joint Secretary in its internal security division between 2002 and 2007. This is the second high profile sacking of a top bureaucrat in a week after foreign secretary Sujatha Singh was removed from her post last Wednesday after she refused to resign. While there were no allegations of misconduct against her, the government is said to have been unhappy with her leadership of the ministry.
