Lawyers join doctors' protest in UP as show of solidarity

Lawyers in Kanpur on Wednesday extended their support to the doctors’ stir by going on a day-long strike. By boycotting work we are not only supporting the affected doctors but also those patients who are left to wander around in need for medical services, Kanpur Bar Association, President Suresh Chauhan said. A group of lawyer representatives has also gone to meet the doctors and will support their fight in every possible way, he said. The protesting doctors have been demanding withdrawal of criminal cases slapped against them. However, stepping in to end the deadlock over the strike, Allahabad High Court today ordered a judicial probe and directed the UP government to transfer SSP, Kanpur, Yashaswi Yadav, and other officials involved in the 28 February incident. The medicos are protesting the alleged brutal beating of their colleagues at GSVM medical college were by Kanpur police and supporters of SP MLA Irfan Solanki on February 28 following an altercation with him. MLA Solanki, on the other hand told reporters today that “he was willing to say sorry to doctors without any fault of his”. GSVM’s Head of Medicine Department, Aarti Lal Chandani has said the stir will continue until the criminal cases against the doctors are withdrawn. The six-day-old strike has adversely hit medical services in several parts of the state. PTI
