In a major turn of events, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch has officially launched the extradition process of Anmol Bishnoi, the brother of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi after the authorities in the United States alerted Indian officials about his presence in the country.

A senior official close to the case told The Indian Express that on October 16, the Mumbai Police submitted before the court that they intend to initiate Anmol’s extradition in connection with the Salman Khan house firing case. The crime branch approached a special court in this regard, last month.

The authorities alleged that with Lawerence behind the bar, major criminal operations, including the firing outside Khan’s house in April, were carried out by his 25-year-old brother. It is pertinent to note that Anmol’s name emerged during the investigation of the murder of NCP (Ajit Pawar) leader and former MLA Baba Siddique.

NIA announces Rs 10 lakh reward on Anmol

The law enforcement officials alleged that Anmol had spoken to the accused who fired at the leader. Last week, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh on Anmol. The agency noted that the fugitive has 18 cases registered against him. This includes the case where he allegedly provided weapons and logistics support to the accused who killed Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022.

An official told The Indian Express that Anmol was identified as a wanted accused in the Khan chargesheet after the Red Corner Notice (RCN) was issued. “Based on the RCN, US authorities reached out to us a few months ago alerting us about Anmol’s presence in the US,” the official told the news outlet.

Lack of clarity

Officials noted that there was no clarity on whether Anmol is currently detained by the US authorities but his possible location within the country may have been traced. The extradition documents have been provided to the Ministry of Home Affairs following which the Ministry of External Affairs will eventually co-ordinate with the US authorities over the matter.

If the extradition process is approved, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch will get Anmol’s custody. Meanwhile, the Mumbai police did not get the custody of Lawrence Bishnoi who is currently in the Sabarmati prison in Gujarat.
