Landslide on Mumbai-Pune expressway kills two, disrupts traffic

Pune/Mumbai: A landslide on the busy Mumbai-Pune expressway on Sunday killed two persons and injured three others, disrupting the traffic for the entire day and causing hardships to a large number of commuters on a weekend outing. Both the deceased identified as Shashikant Dhamankar (50) and Deepak Patel, hailing from Mumbai, were crushed under the landslide debris that came down to hit their car. The mishap occurred at the mouth of the Adoshi tunnel near Khopoli bringing the heavy vehicular traffic to a grinding halt. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. Maharashtra Public Works Development (PWD) minister Eknath Shinde who visited the spot said the rescue operation to clear the debris and restart the traffic, though hampered by rains and fog, was going on a war footing and normalization on the route was expected by late evening. “We are taking necessary measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents during the monsoon”, he added. “Compensation of Rs 4 lakh each will be given to the the kin of the deceased”, Shinde was quoted as saying in an official release. Following the incident, the highway police diverted some of the Pune bound traffic through the old Mumbai-Pune highway to ease congestion. This is the second landslide in the current monsoon season on the expressway. The earlier one, however, had not caused any casualties. Meanwhile, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu announced two special trains between Mumbai and Pune to clear the passengers stranded due to a landslide on the busy highway that has crippled road traffic. He also said the passengers can avail train services to reach their destination.

6 trains leaving pune for mumbai in the next six hours plus one spl will be run at 1930hrs from pune to mumbai with 16 coaches .

Following the landslide, the road has been closed for traffic. Investigation is underway to find out whether the victims were travelling from Pune to Mumbai or vice versa, police said. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Lonavla. PTI
