Parents and relatives of the 31-year-old woman trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, have shared heart wrenching ordeal soon after they were informed about their daughter’s death on August 9.

In a discussion with India Today’s Lallantop, the father of the trainee doctor said that his suspicion rose soon after he started getting calls from the hospital. “I knew something had happened to my daughter,” he said.

Over the call, the hospital authorities said “your daughter has died by suicide. Come immediately,” recalled the father of the doctor whose semi-naked body was found in a seminar hall of state-run RG Kar Hospital in West Bengal’s capital Kolkata on Friday (August 9) morning.

Initially, the Kolkata Police had suspected that the doctor had died by suicide but later changed its version.

‘Made us to wait outside for 3 hours’

The parents of the trainee doctor along with a relative, who lives in the neighbourhood, and an acquaintance rushed to the hospital soon after getting the news of their daughter’s death.

Upon reaching there, they were made to wait for three hours.

“I heard her (mother) cry aloud. When I went there, she hugged me and cried that everything is over. She told me about getting a call from the hospital, saying her daughter has died by suicide,” the relative said.

“She (the victim’s mother) was inconsolable after learning about her daughter. I went with them to the hospital. Her parents pleaded before them (hospital authorities) to show them their daughter’s face, but they made us wait for three hours,” the relative further said.

‘Doctor’s legs were 90 degrees apart’

The relative further said that after three hours, when the parents were allowed inside the seminar hall to see their daughter’s body, they were told that they could only click a picture.

“He (the victim’s father) came outside the seminar hall and showed the picture to me. She had no clothes on her body. Her legs were 90 degrees apart… this cannot happen unless the pelvic girdle breaks, which means she was torn apart,” the relative said.

“Her spectacles were broken and there were shards of glasses in her eyes. She was strangled to death. I am not making this up. All this has been proven in the post-mortem report too,” she added.

Demand for justice

Sharing the interview on X, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla reacted to the victim’s family ordeal.

“The chilling details of brutality the junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. Never forget. Never forgive. TMC & INDI alliance,” he said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, also shared the interview on her social media handle and said, “This is the most gut wrenching and heartbreaking retelling of what the parents of the lady PGT doctor in RG Kar Medical College went through and what her parents faced.”

She further said that the fast track courts should punish the accused and also all those who tried to cover up the crime by calling it suicide.

“Nothing short of death penalty should be the case made by the CBI,” she added.
