Killings cannot be accepted, Mamata warns KLO

Kolkata: In a veiled warning to the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), suspected to be behind the recent bomb blast in Jalpaiguri district in which six people died, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said taking up arms in the name of protection of human rights cannot be accepted. Banerjee, who did not say whether activities of the KLO was discussed during the meeting with Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami during the day, condemned the blast. Apparently hinting at KLO’s movements and its claim to take up the cause of the Rajbhanshi tribe in North Bengal, she said persons belonging to the Rajbhanshi and minority communities were also killed in the blast. “Human beings were killed. These things cannot be tolerated. In today’s world, there is a change in thinking,” she said. “My appeal is, please do not support those who indulge in riots and killings,” Banerjee said. The Chief Minister had earlier said violence in the name of movements would not go down well with the people and claimed, the KLO was raising money in the name of such agitations. After coming to power in 2011, the TMC government had started a process of releasing political prisoners, which saw about 250 prisoners being released. Many KLO militants figured in that list. PTI
