In what came as another blow to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu’s efforts to modernise and improve India’s railway system, 15 coaches of the Ajmer-Sealdah Express derailed near Rura — near Kanpur — on Wednesday. The coaches included 13 sleeper coaches and two general coaches. The incident took place reportedly at 5.22 am as the train was crossing a bridge over a dry canal in the area. Forty-four people were injured in the accident apart from the deceased. Unfortunately, however, for Prabhu and his ministry, this is the latest in a series of train accidents that have occurred all over India in 2016: The railway minister, along with the Indian public at large, will be hoping that 2017 proves to be a much safer year for rail transport in the country.
