As the Bihar Assembly elections heat up, political bigwig including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other prominent leaders engaged in a battle of words. With the state’s 7.43 crore eligible voters set to decide the fate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Mahagathbandhan, the stakes are high in the November 6 and 11 polls.
BJP National President and Union Minister JP Nadda on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), describing the tenure of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi as a “dark era” for Bihar. He said the party’s decision to nominate late gangster-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin’s son, Osama Shahab, for the upcoming assembly elections reflects that “RJD’s culture and DNA have not changed.”
Addressing election rallies in Siwan and Muzaffarpur virtually, after bad weather prevented him from travelling to the venues, Nadda alleged that kidnapping had become an “industry” during the RJD regime, and ransom negotiations were often settled at the chief minister’s residence.
“Bihar witnessed ‘jungle raj’ under the RJD regime. There was complete anarchy in the state. Law and order had collapsed, and along with that, an industry of kidnapping started growing here,” Nadda said.

Referring to Shahabuddin’s influence in Siwan, Nadda claimed, “The district had witnessed the terror of Shahabuddin, and once again, RJD has nominated his son in the assembly polls. Lalu Prasad’s party wants to bring back ‘jungle raj’ to Bihar.”
The BJP chief accused RJD of perpetuating a legacy of lawlessness and intimidation, asserting that the party’s ideology remains unchanged. “RJD still stands for ‘Rangdari’ (extortion), ‘Jungle raj’ (anarchy) and ‘Dadagiri’ (intimidation),” he said.
Osama Shahab, son of the late RJD strongman Mohammad Shahabuddin, is contesting from Siwan’s Raghunathpur seat as the party’s candidate.
”I want you to recall Lalu Prasad’s ’jungle raj’. Remember it forever, and only then will you be able to appreciate and realise the importance of CM Nitish Kumar’s development works,” he said.
”Don’t vote for RJD as its leaders, Lalu, Rabri, Tejashwi and Misa Bharti, are all out on bail,” he said.
Nadda, the Union health minister, alleged that the law and order situation in the state had completely collapsed during the RJD rule.
”Kidnapping of doctors and engineers was normal in those days. After 2005, Bihar gained momentum in terms of development. Things were brought back on track. Now the need is to give a new stability to the NDA government under the leadership of CM Kumar,” he said.
Recalling the ’tel pilawan, lathi ghumawan rally’ that Prasad led in 2003, Nadda said such leaders could never think of development.
He claimed that under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and CM Kumar, the people of Bihar were witnessing growth.
”Bihar is continuously moving forward on the path of development. I urge people to vote for NDA only,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi and the Congress government, accusing them of betraying the very people they claimed to stand for. During the 2023 Telangana elections, Rahul Gandhi had made a grand show of riding in an auto in Hyderabad, promising to set up an Auto Drivers’ Welfare Board and provide ₹12,000 annual financial assistance to every driver. Two years later, not one of those promises has been kept.
KTR warned that as Congress now joins the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, people there must take note of what happened in Telangana. “The same script is being replayed: big promises, big slogans, and then big betrayal. Telangana’s auto drivers were fooled once; Bihar’s people must not be fooled next,” he said.
