Japanese tourist gangrape: Two accused sent to 7-day judicial custody

Kolkata: A city court on Saturday remanded two persons, accused of repeatedly gangraping a Japanese tourist in Gaya, to judicial custody for seven days after they were brought here on transit remand. The detective department of Kolkata Police did not seek police remand of the two accused siblings - Zahir and Shahid - as they want to hold the Test Identification parade before the tourist leaves for her country. AP[/caption] The officiating Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Bankshall Court Aniruddha Saha remanded the accused to judicial custody till January nine on a prayer by prosecution for the same for holding the identification parade. The accused were arrested yesterday by a joint team of Kolkata and Gaya Police and brought here on a transit remand. Zahir and Shahid were arrested from their house at Taro village under Fatehpur police station of Gaya district for confining and raping the Japanese tourist. According to police, the tourist was befriended on 20 November by a person named Wasim Khan who spoke Japanese and with whom she went to Gaya. “Once there, Wasim molested her and took Rs 76,000 from her bank account before handing her over to the duo. There (at Gaya) the brothers confined her till the end of December and repeatedly gangraped her,” according to Special Commissioner (Crime) of Kolkata Police, Pallab Kanti Ghosh. Later, they put the girl into a bus bound for Varanasi where she got in touch with her friends and contacted the Japanese consulate in Kolkata, Ghosh said. After returning here on 26 December, she lodged the FIR at Park Street police station that the brothers along with a few of their accomplices had confined her since November 26 and gangraped her. Following this, Wasim was arrested and acting on information collected from him during interrogation, a Kolkata Police team went to Gaya and arrested the duo. PTI
