J Dey murder case: Police seek 45-day extension to file chargesheet

The Mumbai Crime Branch, which is probing the murder of  journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, is likely to name underworld don Chota Rajan and firearms supplier Nain Singh Bisht in the chargesheet, says a CNN IBN report. The Crime Branch, however,  today sought extension of 45 days for filing the charge sheet from the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) court. The chargesheet is likely by Thursday. Jyotirmoy Dey, 56, a senior journalist with   Mid Day, was shot  by four motorcycle-borne assailants in Powai on 11 June. Shah argued that the case was of serious and sensitive nature and crime branch will join all the dots before filing the charge sheet. He told the court that the investigating officer had received (additional) information and needs time to probe further. Arguing that the investigators need to go to the root of the matter, the special public prosecutor said the sleuths have found details regarding sim cards and conversation which need to be verified. Shah said the delay in filing the charge sheet will neither have any adverse impact on the course of investigation nor will cause any prejudice towards the accused. Whatever is in the report is the judgment of the investigating officer and he needs to be given a chance to probe into all the aspects involved, Shah said. Referring to the reports published in some sections of media indicating that a journalist is also responsible and is under interrogation in connection with the murder case, the counsel said such reports are interfering in the investigation. He, however, told the court that the investigating officer was exploring all the angles pertaining to the murder. Ten accused, including Rohee Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya and his associates, namely Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge,Mangesh Agawane, Vinod Asrani, Paulson Joseph and Deepak Sisodia–all members of Chhota Rajan gang—were so far arrested in connection with the murder.
