The railway stations in India are notorious for being filthy and unhygienic. Garbage on the platforms and tracks and paan-stains on the walls is nothing new but in a rather shocking incident, which could now be touted as the new low for Indian railways, a man was seen urinating at a spot which is used to clean utensils and wash vegetables at the railway station in New Delhi, the national capital and the place where PM Narendra Modi launched his Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
When asked why he was urinating at a place used as a kitchen, he said, “It was an emergency….there is no bathroom here. What do we do in case of an emergency?”
In another kitchen on the same platform, the food meant for passengers was left out in the open. The kitchen also had dysfunctional coolers and blocked drainage pipes.
The kitchen staff are also shown as responding rudely to a request by the consumer. When a CNN IBN reporter asked whether he could take a look at the egg curry prepared by the staff, one of the staff members said, “Do you want to eat or see?”
