Israel removes India map showing J&K's part in Pakistan, calls it 'website editor's mistake' post backlash

Israel has pulled down a map of India from its official website which had incorrectly depicted a part of Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan. The map was taken down after a massive criticism on social media.

The issue was initially pointed out by Indian influencer Abhijit Chavda, who posted on X, questioning Israel’s relationship with India despite the diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Abhijid Chavda, who boasts of having nearly 2 lakh followers on the platform, highlighted the erroneous map and urged followers to pay attention to Jammu and Kashmir’s representation.

In response to the criticism, Israel’s ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, acknowledged the mistake, calling it a “website editor’s mistake”.

Azar confirmed that the incorrect map had been removed. “Website editor’s mistake. Thank you for noticing. Was taken down,” he said.

Chavda expressed gratitude following the removal of the wrong representation by the Israeli government, stating that the decision reflects Israel’s commitment to strengthening ties with India.

India has always maintained that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir would always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.

Interestingly, this development occurred even as Israel engages in a multi-front conflict in West Asia, following the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The on-going violence has resulted in over 1,000 fatalities and the displacement of more than a million people, as Israel redirects its military efforts from Gaza to Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah strongholds.

The situation intensified when Iran fired a barrage of 200 missiles at Israel on Tuesday, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to issue threats of retaliatory strikes.

This ‘error’ was noticed, despite India’s strong support for Israel, especially following the October 7 Hamas attacks last year. At that time, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first leaders to condemn the violence.
