ISIS recruit Areeb Majeed's judicial custody extended till 31 December

Mumbai: The NIA on Wednesday told a special court in Mumbai that it has completed the interrogation of alleged ISIS recruit Areeb Majeed, after which he was remanded in judicial custody till 31 December. Five days before Majeed’s NIA remand comes to an end, the investigating agency on Wednesday told special judge Y D Shinde that since it was through with the questioning, it does not require his custody any more. On 8 December, the court had remanded Majeed to NIA custody till 22 December. Meanwhile, Majeed on Wednesday moved an application in the court pleading that he should not be kept in solitary confinement nor should any other investigating agency must quiz him. In his plea, he also sought that his family members be allowed to meet him in jail. The 23-year-old youth from Kalyan landed in Mumbai on November 28 after spending nearly six months in Iraq, following which he was immediately detained by the security agencies and later arrested. A case under Unlawful Assembly Prevention Act (UAPA) and a section under IPC which deals with waging war against any Asiatic country, which has friendly ties with India, was registered against ISIS, Majeed and three other youngsters. In May this year, four youths from Kalyan, including Majeed, had left the country to visit holy places in West Asia but disappeared thereafter. They were suspected to have joined ISIS. According to police, the four engineering students had flown to Baghdad on May 23 as part of a group of 22 pilgrims to visit religious shrines in Iraq. PTI
