Ishrat Jahan case: Four accused cops given charge sheet copies

Ahmedabad: Four police officers, accused in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, were on Monday given copies of the charge sheet filed by CBI earlier this month. The central agency, probing the 2004 episode, filed its first charge sheet on 3 July before a special CBI court here against seven police officers, some of them from IPS. Suspended IPS officer G L Singhal, retired DSP J G Parmar, Mehsana DySP Tarun Barot and Police Commando Anaju Chaudhary were present with their lawyers in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate B G Joshi to get their respective copies. According to CBI, Ishrat, a Mumbai-based college girl, her friend Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai and two Pakistani nationals Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed in a fake encounter, which was a joint operation between Gujarat Police and IB, near here on 15 June, 2004. Besides the four, three more police officers have been named as accused in the case. Suspended IPS officer D G Vanzara, who is unwell, was given the charge sheet copy through his lawyer V D Gajjar last Monday. Additional Director General of Police P P Pandey has been declared proclaimed absconder by the court. Another accused, N K Amin, also named in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, was not present in the court today and the charge sheet copy was given to his lawyer. At the time of encounter, Gujarat Police had claimed the four were Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives on a mission to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. PTI
