India on Tuesday declared a Pakistani diplomat working at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi persona non grata for engaging in activities inconsistent with his diplomatic status.

The Pakistani diplomat has been directed to leave the country within 24 hours.

“The Government of India has declared a Pakistani official, working at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, persona non grata for indulging in activities not in keeping with his official status in India. The official has been asked to leave India within 24 hours,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement added that a formal demarche conveying this decision was issued to the Charge d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission.

The move comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, following a series of cross-border strikes launched under India’s Operation Sindoor.

The operation was carried out in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives — the majority of them tourists, including a Nepalese national — and targeted terror infrastructure across the border.
