 "Indian prisoner in Karachi jail dies by suspected suicide, says prison authorities")
An Indian prisoner died by a suspected suicide in Karachi’s Malir jail, Geo TV reported, citing prison officials. Malir Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah said that the alleged suicide occurred between the night of 24 and 25 March.
The deceased inmate has been identified as Gaurav, son of Ram Anand. He was sent to Malir jail on 2 February 2022 by a civil judge.
The prison authorities said Gaurav was found hanging with a rope in the washroom of the barrack, where other Indian prisoners are also held.
Jail authorities said the duty doctor examined Gaurav and declared him dead at around 2:20 am. The duty magistrate then conducted an inquest and ordered the body to be kept in a morgue until further instructions.
After confirming his death, the jail medical staff moved the body to Jinnah Hospital for legal procedures and later to Edhi Mortuary in Sohrab Goth.
The official said that an autopsy will be conducted under the magistrate’s supervision.
Exchange of list of prisoners on New Year
In January, Pakistan and India exchanged lists of nuclear installations and prisoners on New Year’s Day.
Both countries shared the lists through diplomatic channels as part of the 2008 Consular Access Agreement. Under this agreement, they must exchange prisoner lists every year on 1 January and 1 July. Pakistan provided India with a list of 266 Indian prisoners in its custody, including 49 civilian prisoners and 217 fishermen. The list was handed over to an Indian High Commission representative in Islamabad.
