Indian Coast Guard seizes 6,000 kg methamphetamine in Andaman: 10 things about 'biggest ever drug haul'

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) seized a massive consignment of drugs from a fishing boat in Andaman waters.

Here are 10 big things to know about ‘biggest’ ever drug haul by the Indian Coast Guard ever.

1 - According to a report by PTI, 6,000 kg of contraband Methamphetamine was seized near Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

2 - The drugs were seized from a vessel with six Myanmarese crew, who have been arrested.

3 - They were found concealed, carefully packed in around 3,000 packets of 2 kg each.

4 - The drugs seized by the Indian Coast Guard on Monday are worth several crores of rupees in the international market.

5 - The fishing trawler on November 23 made suspicious movement near Barren Island, approximately 150 km from Port Blair on November 23, which caught the attention of the pilot of a Coast Guard Dornier aircraft which was on routine patrolling.

6 - The trawler was warned and asked to lower its speed. The pilot alerted the Andaman and Nicobar Command.

7 - Immediately, fast patrolling vessels were rushed towards Barren Island and towed the fishing trawler to Port Blair on November 24.

8 - The PTI reported a defence official as saying it is believed that the Methamphetamine, which is mainly used as a recreational or performance-enhancing drug, was meant for India and its neighbouring countries.

9 - A report by ANI mentioned defence officials as saying, “This is likely to be the biggest ever drug haul by the Indian Coast Guard ever.”

10 - The recent incident comes within months after the Andaman and Nicobar Police destroyed seized drugs worth Rs 475 crore in the union territory. Nearly, 238.416 kg of methamphetamine, 67.636 kg of ganja, 1.060 kg of cocaine, 21 cannabis plants, 76 grams of charas, 546 bottles of codeine-based syrup and 553 tablets of alprazolam were destroyed at GB Pant Hospital.
