Indian Army troops deployed at a forward post in Mendhar, Poonch, opened fire late last night after detecting suspicious movement along the Line of Control (LoC). The incident took place days after the devastating Pahalgam attack that killed 26 tourists in the region.
Defence Sources told News18 that the movement was challenged by a sentry on duty. The manoeuvres prompted immediate action to prevent any potential infiltration attempt.
Earlier this week, 26 people — 25 Indians and one Nepali — were killed and several were injured after a group of terrorists linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) opened fire at the popular tourist destination located in Baisaran valley in southern Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
Soon after the incident, a search operation was launched in the area to rule out the possibility of infiltration. Meanwhile, an encounter between security forces and terrorists occurred in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district. Additional security forces have reportedly rushed to the spot.
On Wednesday, the Indian Army foiled terrorists’ bid to cross the Line of Control in Baramulla district. At least two terrorists were killed in the encounter. According to the Indian army, approximately two to three terrorists on Wednesday attempted to infiltrate through Uri Nala.
The officials also recovered two assault rifles, ammunition and other war-like stores. Additionally, pistols and rounds of bullets have been received, and one IED was also retrieved, the army said in a press release.
