India will conduct mock drills in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow. The drills will be held in districts bordering Pakistan.
The mock drills come weeks after India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6-7 against terrorists and their backers in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK). As Pakistan responded with attacks on Indian military bases and cities, India struck at least eight Pakistani air bases and other military sites, such as air defence units and radar sites. As a result of the Indian hammering, Pakistan requested a ceasefire on May 10 that India granted.
Notably, mock drills were announced for May 7 in 244 districts of bordering states and union territories (UTs).
The stated purpose of the mock drills at the time was to operationalise air raid warning sirens; training of civilians, students, etc, on civil defence aspects to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack; testing blackouts’ implementation; ensuring early camouflaging of vital plants and installations; and updating evacuation plans and rehearsing such plans.
Sources said at the time that mock drills were an effort to acquaint the current generation with wartime standard operating procedures (SOPs) and measures. They further said that while there is no need to panic, the seriousness of the situation demands that people are educated on such SOPs and measures.
