India imposes anti-dumping duty on cold-rolled steel imports from China for five years

India has imposed anti-dumping ‌duty on ‌cold rolled steel imports ‍from China for five years to protect the domestic industry, it said late on Thursday.

The ⁠duty on ​a variety ‍of cold-rolled steel ‌imported from ‌China ranges from $223.8 per ton to $414.9 per ⁠ton, the ⁠order said.

According to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), India has imposed an anti-dumping duty of $223.82 per tonne on imports of Cold Rolled Non-Oriented Electrical Steel (CRNO) from China.

CRNO covers cold-rolled flat silicon electrical steel products, whether supplied in coils or otherwise, and is commonly used in electrical equipment such as motors, generators and small transformers. The DGTR clarified that Cold Rolled Full Hard Silicon Electrical Steel (CRFH), a raw material used in the production of CRNO has been excluded from the scope of the duty.

The decision followed an investigation by the DGTR, which found that dumped imports from China had caused material injury to India’s domestic steel industry. The probe was launched after local producers filed a complaint alleging that these products were being sold in the Indian market at unfairly low prices.

Based on its conclusions, the DGTR recommended the levy of the anti-dumping duty, a proposal that has now been approved by the government.

Separately, India imposed an anti-dumping duty on steel imports from Vietnam last month, a move industry observers say was aimed at preventing the rerouting of Chinese steel through Vietnam.
