With Independence Day 2023 inching closer on 15 August, the day is commemorated annually to mark the lives of soldiers and freedom fighters who fought for India’s independence. In 1947, India gained freedom from the British after two centuries of colonial rule. The event is celebrated by hoisting the national flag, participating in several nation-related cultural programmes and listening to the Prime Minister’s speech from Red Fort.
However, there are guidelines to follow on who can hoist the National Flag and what things should be kept in mind while doing so. The National Flag is a horizontal tricolor comprising deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. Furthermore, the standard ratio of flag width to its length is two to three. A navy blue wheel represents the chakra in the centre of the white band.
The Government of India (GOI) made some amendments last year that allow the National Flag to be displayed both in the day and night. It is permissible only if it is displayed in the open or in the house of a public member. Based on the earlier guidelines, it could only be erected between sunrise and sunset.
Check out the guidelines regarding National Flag display at home:
-The tricolour should be placed prominently so that it occupies the position of honour.
-The flag should always be well-kept. Damaged or rumpled flags should never be displayed.
-The tricolour should never be displayed inverted. It should be hoisted with saffron at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom.
-The National Flag should not be dipped or bowed in salute to any person or thing.
-No other flag or holding should be placed higher than or parallel to the National Flag.

View All-No external ornamentation including flowers, garlands, or emblems, should be placed on or above the flag mast.
-The National Flag should not be used for decoration or wrapping.
-The National Flag should not touch the ground or soak aimlessly in the water under any circumstance or condition.
-Nothing should be written on the flag.
How should the National Flag be disposed of?
If there is a damaged or weathered national flag in possession, it must be disposed of in private. The act must be carried out by burning or by any other method that preserves its dignity.
Last year, as citizens of India geared up to celebrate the 76th Independence Day, the Government of India launched an innovative campaign, ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’. As part of the campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to Indians to participate in the cause by displaying the National Flag in every home from 13 to 15 August, 2022.
