IMD predicts heavy rainfall for Odisha in next four days; water level of all major rivers in state presently below danger mark

Bhubaneswar: Many parts of Odisha are likely to be lashed by heavy rainfall in the next four days, the Meteorological Centre said on Wednesday. A monsoon trough line extending from east Uttar Pradesh to north Tamil Nadu through Odisha is likely to trigger heavy rain in many areas of the state, it said in a weather bulletin. [caption id=“attachment_7201991” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]Representational image. Reuters Representational image. Reuters[/caption] While light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at many areas for next four days, heavy downpour may lash some places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Cuttack, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Bolangir and Bargarh districts till Thursday, it said. Thunderstorm and lightning is also likely to occur at some places of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Kandhamal, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam and Balasore till Thursday. Similarly, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at some places of Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Nuapada districts, while heavy downpour may lash parts of Malkangiri, Rayagada, Kandhamal and Bolangir on Thursday and Friday, the MeT Centre said. Some areas of Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh districts will experience heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday, while the intensity of rainfall will subside thereafter, it said. Many parts of the state have experienced two spells of heavy downpour earlier this month due to the formation of two back-to-back low pressure areas in the region. Several areas also faced flash floods due to incessant rains recently. The water levels in all major rivers in the state including Mahanadi are below the danger marks. The water level of Mahanadi river at Naraj in Cuttack now stands at 24.75 metres as against the danger mark of 26.41 metre, the Special Relief Commissioner’s (SRC) office said. The water level at Hirakud dam on river Mahanadi stood at 619.31 feet at 12 noon as against the full reservoir capacity of 630 feet, it said.
