As many as 38% of graduates of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduates in 2024 have not been placed so far, according to data accessed through the Right to Information (RTI) applications.

To place these students, at least IIT Delhi (IIT-D) and IIT Bombay (IIT-B) have reached to the alumni network, according to The Times of India.

Separately, the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani has also reached out to the alumnus network to place the current year’s graduates.

While the percentage for 2021 was 19%, the figures for 2022 and 2023 were 21% and 38% respectively.

Dheeraj Singh, an alumna of IIT-D who filed the RTI application, told the paper that both the number of students sitting for placements and not being placed have gone up in recent years.

“Over 7,000 IIT students are yet to be placed via campus placement this year across all the 23 IITs. Two years ago, this unplaced number was half at 3,400. While the number of students sitting in placements has gone up 1.2 times, the number of unplaced students has doubled to 2.3 times in two years,” said Singh.

IITs & BITS tap into alumnus network to place students

Considering the large number of students not yet placed, IIT-B, IIT-D, and BITS Pilani have reached out to their alumnus for help.

In a message to alumnus, IIT-D sought them to provide the students from the current batch to give a “helping hand”.

“On behalf of the Office of Career Services (OCS) at IIT-Delhi, we appeal to you to consider extending a helping hand to our students. Your support and efforts in this matter will not only be greatly appreciated but will also serve as a crucial steppingstone for these students as they embark on their professional journeys,” said the statement, as per the paper.

In a separate statement, BITS Group Vice Chancellor V Ramgopal Rao said that placements have gone down by 20-30% everywhere because of artificial intelligence and language models. He said the requirement of professionals have fallen. He also flagged over-hiring in recent years.

“Everywhere, placements are 20% to 30% lower. If some institute is saying all students have been placed, the quality of jobs leaves much to be desired. This is the first year when ChatGPT and large language models have started showing their impact. If two people can do the work of three people, we are already 30% down in hiring. There has already been a lot of over-hiring and many countries are holding elections this year, so companies are adopting a wait-and-watch policy,” said Rao.
