IAS babu mocks military martyrdom, questions compensation

An Uttar Pradesh bureaucrat today created a flutter on Twitter with his statement to a group of journalists by saying that it is only in India that the bereaved kin of soldiers demand compensation. An NDTV report quoted Aligarh district magistrate Rajeev Rautela as saying, “5,000 Americans have been killed in Afghanistan, but you will never hear their families asking for compensation, they want to do something for the country.” [caption id=“attachment_1112681” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Image for representational purpose only. AFP[/caption] He said such demands are not seen in any other country except India. “Until we get petrol pumps or Rs 50 lakh compensation, we say we won’t allow last rites, how will this country progress?” NDTV quoted Rautela as saying. Rautela said that it is a soldier’s duty to give his life for the country.
