In what came as a big relief for Nupur Talwar, the CBI has assured the Supreme Court that they will not arrest her until the Chief Justice of India hears her case, seeking a stay order issued against her by a lower court. The warrant had been issued against her after she failed to appear before it on Wednesday. She was also seen praying and chanting to herself. This is the first time Nupur has presented herself before a court since the non bailable warrant was issued against her. The CBI was on the look out for her, after they failed to find her at her residence following the issue of the warrant. While she showed no outward relief at the reprieve granted to her by the Supreme Court, it must have been an extremely nervous day for her. As expected the courtroom was packed with lawyers and reporters, given the sensational value this case has come to have. The matter has now been referred to the chief justice with a request to be listed as early as possible. “Are you going to arrest her? Then we’ll have to protect her…we have full faith in you,” the bench told the public prosecutor. Both senior advocates Harish Salve and Mukul Rohtagi, who are representing Nupur, were present in court. There was however no opportunity for them to argue their case as the bench immediately referred the matter to the CJI. Apart from her lawyers, Nupur was accompanied by a family friend. Nupur and her husband are facing trial for the murders of their teenage daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj.
