Hizb militants kill members of breakaway faction: 3 bodies with torture marks found in Kashmir

Srinagar: Hizbul Mujahideen militants suspectedly killed two activists of a breakaway faction along with an unidentified person, reflecting growing struggle between militant outfits in Kashmir. Bodies of the three were found in an orchard about 30 kms from here in Pattan in Baramulla district this morning. Two of them were later identified as Aamir Qadir Reshi of Sopore and 23-year-old Ashiq Wani of Lolipora of Pattan, police said, adding efforts were underway to identify the third one. Reshi and Wani have been associated with Lashker-e-Islam, a breakaway outfit of Hizbul Mujahideen formed by its rebel leader Abdul Qayyum Najjar, sources said. Wani was an active militant since last last year while Reshi had joined ranks with the terror group in July this year, they said. Police said the three could have been killed by Hizbul Mujahideen members led by Fayaz Wailoo, who has reportedly been tasked to neutralise members of the Najjar faction. Najjar broke ranks with Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin earlier this year to float his outfit which carried out attacks on mobile towers and other telecommunication installations despite being warned not to do so. Reuters[/caption] He was also responsible for killing of some separatists sympathisers in Sopore who were associated with Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, sources said. After discovery of the bodies in the morning, there were protests in Pattan and Palhalan towns on Srinagar-Baramulla highway and markets in the area were closed down. “The protestors resorted to stone-pelting on law enforcing personnel. Additional forces have been rushed to the area to bring the situation under control,” police said. Working President of opposition National Conference and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed sorrow over the mysterious killing of the three youth and demanded a high-level probe into the incident. “The killing of the youth is inhuman and heart-rending act….A high-level probe should be immediately ordered into the incident,” Omar said in a statement here. He said the incident needs to be thoroughly probed to identify the culprits and expose their motive behind the killings. Ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) termed the incident as “sorrowful and condemnable” and assured “appropriate action” as per law against the culprits. “It (killing of three youth) is condemnable and sorrowful incident and police should investigate it on fast-track basis,” PDP General Secretary Rafi Ahmad Mir said in a statement here. Expressing sorrow and anguish over the incident, he said “I am sure the investigation will take place and taken to the logical conclusion and action would be taken against the people behind this.” He said the “Valley has a fragile political atmosphere where the people have been the worst sufferers of conflict and such incidents leave them psychologically numb and disturbed.” He asked the opposition parties to desist from playing politics over the incident. “This a serious issue and opposition should desist from playing politics over it,” he said adding the government would take appropriate action as per law and the expectations of the people.
