Gopichand Hinduja, chairperson of the global Hinduja Group, passed away in London at the age of 85, PTI reported, citing sources close to his family. Popularly known as GP Hinduja, he had been unwell for the past few weeks.
UK lawmaker Rami Ranger condoled the death of the Indian-origin tycoon, calling him “one of the most gracious, humble, and loyal friends.” Ranger said Hinduja’s passing “marks the end of an era,” adding, “He was a well-wisher of the community and a guiding force… He has left a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill. May he rest in peace. Om Shanti.”
A legacy of leadership
Part of the second generation of the Hinduja family, Gopichand took over as chairman of the multinational conglomerate — with interests in automobiles, banking, energy, and media — after his elder brother Srichand’s death in May 2023.
Under his leadership, the Hinduja Group expanded across continents and became one of the world’s largest family-owned business empires.
Britain’s richest man
Gopichand Hinduja was ranked the richest individual in the United Kingdom for seven consecutive years, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.
From Sindh to a global empire
Born in 1940, Gopichand was the second son of Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, who founded the Hinduja business in 1914 in India’s Sindh region.
A graduate of Mumbai’s Jai Hind College (1959), he also received honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster and Richmond College, London.
He was among the key figures who transformed the Hinduja business from a regional trading firm into a multi-billion-dollar global enterprise.
