The teams include teams from the NDRF, the Indian Navy, the Coast Guard, the Indian Army, the State Disaster Response Force. 11 of the 22 teams have been deployed in Sangli. One column of the Indian Army, the Defence Security Corps, which included 57 personnel, have been moved to Kerala’s Wayanad for relief and recuse operations, NDTV reported on Thursday. The Karnataka government on Thursday cancelled the leave of all health department employees in light of the escalating flood situation in the state. On Wednesday, reports said that nearly 26,000 people had been evacuated and five people were killed in rain-related incidents in this week. A woman died in Malappuram District when a tree got uprooted and fell over her house, the District Management Authority told PTI. Palakkad District also received heavy rains on Wednesday. The IMD had declared an Orange alert in various districts from 6 to 9 August, including in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kasargod, Alapuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur and Thrissur districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “extremely heavy rain” warning for Pune, Satara and Kolhapur districts of Western Maharashtra for Thursday. The districts of Kolhapur and Sangli have been battered by rains for the last few days and grappling with floods. However, there was no warning for Sangli district which may get only light-to-moderate rain, the IMD said on Wednesday evening. “Extremely heavy rain’ warning is issued for Pune, Satara and Kolhapur districts, especially for ghat (hilly) areas, on 7 August and 8 August, and on 9 August, there is a heavy to very heavy rain warning for these three districts, especially for ghat areas,” said Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather department, IMD. On Thursday, Pune city too is likely to get a good spell of rain, he said. “There is a red alert exclusively for ghat areas of Pune district,” said Kashyapi. As the dams near Pune are filled to the brim, more water will have to be released, so there is a possibility of “partial inundation” in Pune city and outskirts on Friday, he said. Ghat areas of Kolhapur are expected to receive extremely heavy rain on Thursday and “heavy to very heavy rain” the day after. Elsewhere in Maharashtra, there will be a reduction in the rainfall activity on 10 and 11 August, there will be a significant reduction lasting for at least three to four days, Kashyapi said.

Talking to the media, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that four people lost their lives in Kolhapur on Thursday, while 3,813 houses were damaged. He said that 390 water supply schemes became dysfunctional due to floods.
Fadnavis said that Rs 5 lakh compensation will be given to the kin of those who lost their lives in the Sangli boat capsize. He also said that the government is working to ease petrol and diesel shortage, adding that ministers Chandrakant Patil, Girish Mahajan, MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati and other leaders assisting and monitoring rescue and relief measures.
He said that Home Minister Amit Shah assured all assistance required to the state and that he spoke to BS Yediyurappa on Almatti dam discharge. Fadnavis added that a team of doctors in Mumbai has been readied to travel to affected districts, if required, while enough stock of medicine is being made available. “Evacuation and saving people’s lives is the top priority at the moment. Restoration of electric supply is also a prime agenda,” he said.

After the flood situation worsened in Karnataka, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) members announced that they will donate a month’s salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Over 198 ward corporators of the BBMP pledged to donate the said amount.
Earlier in the day, Karnataka Health and Family Welfare directorate issued directions to district surgeons and health and family development officers to not grant any leaves till 15 August due to flood situation in the state.

Shilling siblings donate Rs 50,000 from pocket money for flood relief
Three siblings in Shillong donated Rs 50,000 from their pocket money to the chief minister’s relief fund to help flood victims in the state, PTI reported. Joyharvard N Marak, who is currently studying at Shillong Commerce College, and his siblings Tengsu and Dede Richa handed over the cheque to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at his office.
Over 1.65 lakh people have been affected in the state this year due to floods in two districts — West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills – the official sources said. Authorities have set up relief camps for the victims and provided them with basic amentities, they added.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit Polavaram and Devipatnam regions in East and West Godavari districts, even as the water level at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowaleswaram crossed the second danger mark. Over 13.47 lakh cusecs of floodwater was flowing into the SAC Barrage on the Godavari and that much was being discharged into the Delta canal systems and Bay of Bengal, according to officials.
Jagan announced a special relief of Rs 5,000 to each flood-affected family which have lost their livelihood. More than 70 percent of the inundated villages were tribal habitations, he pointed out. He asked officials to supply essential commodities to families in inundated villages as well as those marooned. Besides paying compensation for crop loss, the chief minister directed officials to supply fresh seeds free-of-cost.
150 families evacuated amid heavy rains in Goa
Around 150 families have been evacuated in four tehsils of Goa following heavy rains and release of water from Tillari dam on Goa-Maharashtra border, the state government informed on Thursday. The evacuations took place in the Pernem, Bicholim, Canacona and Bardez tehsils over the last 48 hours.
16 deaths relating to floods and rains in South India
At least 16 people have died in rain-related incidents over the past few days in parts of South India. Four deaths were reported from Kerala and three in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. An alert has been sounded in four districts of Kerala and over 2,000 people have been shifted to relief camps. In Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, a third warning signal was raised as the flood level at Gotta Barrage on River Vamsadhara crossed 1.11 lakh cusecs.
Torrential rains battered hilly Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts of Tamil Nadu. In Karnataka, 43,858 people from affected districts in northern, coastal and Malnad have been evacuated by rescue teams comprising Fire and Emergency department, State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force and Army. Nine people have been killed in various rain-related incidents, with Belagavi suffering the maximum casualty of six, authorities said. Two persons lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Uttara Kannada district.
A 50-year-old man was killed in Attappadi, a tribal hamlet in Palakkad district, after a tree fell on his house while a one year-old girl died following landslip in Idukki. Another death was reported from Kannur when a 58-year-old man drowned when he fell into a stream, sources said. In Coimbatore, two contract labourers were killed and another critically injured when the godown keeping railway parcels collapsed in the early hours Thursday, police said. A 65-year-old man died after his house collapsed near Udhagamandalam following incessant rains over the past four days.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa made a fervent appeal to the people to donate generously, saying at least Rs 5,000 crore would be required for relief and rehabilitation in flood-hit and rain-affected areas. In view of the flood situation in many parts of the State, Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murthy has donated Rs 10 crore for the CM Relief Fund, he said, adding, Swami Sampadana Sri of Chikkodi (Belagavi) has donated Rs two lakh.
In addition, at least 30,000 houses were required to be built. Yediyurappa also said, “We will provide boats, helicopters and whatever is required for rehabilitation work. I will not leave this place (Belagavi) until I make proper arrangements.”
Yediyurappa also said four teams of public representatives have been formed to supervise relief operations in different flood and rain-affected areas. The Belagavi team would be headed by him and Union Minister of State for Railway Suresh Angadi whereas former chief minister Jagadish Shettar would lead the Dharwad team. KS Eshwarappa would head the Shivamogga team while Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje would head the coastal team, he said.
The district administration has declared holiday for schools and colleges till 10 August.

16 rain-related deaths reported in Maharashtra in last seven days

Flood water also entered the district prison, forcing authorities to shift prisoners to its upper floor. “Currently there is nearly knee-level water in barracks on the ground floor. We have shifted all inmates to barracks on the first floor. So far, there is no need to shift the inmates out of the jail,” Additional Director General (Prisons) Sunil Ramanand said told PTI.
