Heavy rain takes Mumbai by surprise; thundershowers likely to continue till 10 October

Heavy rains returned to Mumbai on Friday evening, panicking locals and bringing back memories of 29 August, when the city’s civic infrastructure got completely derailed. The sudden downpour took the city by surprise, given that it had been witnessing a prolonged period of clear skies and heat.

The rains were accompanied by lightning and thunder, and more spells of thunderstorms are predicted to hit the city over the next week. But Friday’s rains, which started without any warning at 4.30 pm, caught many citizens unawares.

The Indian Express reported that the weather department had warned the city of a spell or two of rain or thundershowers on Friday. “Similar weather is also expected to continue till Monday in Mumbai. According to the weather department, the monsoon has not yet bid adieu to the city,” the report said. PTI[/caption] The report further stated that a few spells of light to moderate rain is expected from 7 October onwards. It could intensify on 9 and 10 October, the weather bureau had said. Mumbai witnessed incessant rain on 29 August, receiving  298 mm of rainfall . The Santacruz weather station gauged 298 mm of precipitation, which was second only to the 346.2 mm of rainfall registered on 23 August, 1997. “We are closely watching the rainfall and its pattern. People are surprised this time, because heavy rainfall in Mumbai is generally witnessed during June and July,” Ajay Kumar, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, told PTI.
