New Delhi: The government is likely to take a call on re-promulgating the controversial land acquisition ordinance on Saturday.

The earlier ordinance brought into force in March would lapse on 4 June, six weeks after Rajya Sabha was convened on 23 April after being prorogued to enable government bring the executive order.

Sources said the issue of ordinance has been placed on the agenda of the Union Cabinet.

The proposal of the Rural Development Ministry comes as a Joint Committee of Parliament is examining the Land acquisition bill – based on the ordinance in force.

The government, which had promulgated ordinance twice on the bill since December after it faced continuous resistance especially in Rajya Sabha, where it does not have the numbers, had agreed to refer it to the committee, during the recently concluded Parliament session.
