Govt appoints Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi as Army chief, all you need to know

The Union government has appointed Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the next Chief of the Army Staff.

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi will take charge as the Army chief on June 30, said Ministry of Defence (MoD) Spokesperson A Bharat Bhushan on X (formerly Twitter).

Lt/ Gen. Dwivedi is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff.

The present Chief of the Army Staff, Gen. Manoj C Pande, demits office on June 30, 2024.

Who is Lt. Gen Upendra Dwivedi, India’s next Chief of the Army Staff

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi was born on July 1, 1964.

He was commissioned into the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles infantry regiment of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984.

In his long and distinguished service spanning nearly 40 years, Lt. Gen. Dwivedi has served in a variety of Command, Staff, Instructional, and Foreign appointments.

Command appointments of Lt. Gen. Dwivedi include Command of Regiment (18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), DIG of Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps.

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi’s important appointments in the rank of Lt General included that of Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief (Headquarter Northern Command) from 2022-2024 (before getting appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff on June 30).

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi is an alumnus of the Sainik School Rewa, National Defence College, and US Army War College.

He has also undergone courses at the DSSC Wellington and Army War College, Mhow.

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi has been conferred ‘Distinguished Fellow’ in the coveted NDC equivalent course at USAWC, Carlisle, USA.

He has an M Phil in Defence & Management Studies and two Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.

General Dwivedi has been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
