The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) Yuva Morcha has announced that they will go on an indefinite hunger strike from 21 June onwards as the shutdown in Darjeeling for a separate state entered 36th day. Yuva Morcha’s president Prakash Gurung told ANI about the party’s decision to fast unto death to push for their demand for Gorkhaland. The GJM had also called for an indefinite hunger strike from 15 July .

Meanwhile, GJM activists demanded restoration of internet services, which the district administration had suspended since 18 June to stop agitators from using the social media to spread “provocative posts”. The GJM, which is spearheading the statehood agitation, had warned on Saturday that the situation in the hills “will turn terrible”. “The agitation which has been going on for over one month will turn terrible and it will be a decisive battle for our independence,” GJM president Bimal Gurung had said.
