After visiting violence-hit areas in his state, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today chose to criticise the national media in their portrayal of the destruction in three districts and said that the government would provide compensation to the next of kin of all those killed in the mayhem. PTI[/caption] The state government would give Rs 6 lakh as compensation to the next of kin of those who had been killed in the violence that originated in the Kokrajhar district, Gogoi told a press conference today in Kokrajhar. “Relief and rehabilitation work is to be expedited…there are more than 2 lakh people in relief camps,” he said, adding that the situation had now improved. However, angered when journalists asked him about the violence in the state, Gogoi said, “Assam is not burning! Only 3 out of 28 districts are burning!” and proceeded to leave the press conference. Gogoi, who has been accused of inaction in preventing the violence that erupted between the Bodo and Muslim communities in the Kokrajhar district of the state, was on his first visit to the area since the riots erupted.
