Give my daughter justice: Delhi gangrape victim's mother pleads with judge

Making an emotional appeal in court, the Delhi gangrape victim’s mother, who was called today as a witness in the Delhi gangrape trial, urged the judge with folded hands to ensure that justice was done to her daughter. Hamare beti ko insaf zaroor dena," the victim’s mother said to the judge, after her cross-examination by the defence had concluded. Again, after she was given permission to take leave of the courtroom, she appealed to the judge a second time, Hamare beti ko nyay dena. The victim’s mother told the court that on the day of the incident (16 December) her daughter had left the house at around 4 pm telling her that she had some shopping to do and would be home after watching a movie. The victim’s mother said that she was aware that her daughter was going for the movie with her friend, who is the complainant in the case. She told the court that her daughter had taken her mobile phone with her and was carrying an ATM card that was in her (mother’s) name. When her daughter didn’t return even as of 9 pm, the victim’s mother said that she had called her daughter on her mobile phone but it was switched off. She said she had dialled the friend’s phone as well, but it was also switched off. “At 11-11:15 pm, I received a call from the PCR informing me that some incident had happened with my daughter and I was asked to come to Safdarjung Hospital immediately. I along with my husband rushed to Safdarjung hospital and there I found my daughter admitted in emergency. I could not talk to my daughter at that time as she was being taken for an operation. We stayed at the hospital during her treatment. " The victim’s mother also identified in court the ATM that had been seized from the accused as being the same that she had given to her daughter. During cross-examination by the defence counsel for accused Vinay Sharma, the victim’s mother told the court that her daughter “was residing at Dehradun as she was doing her paramedical course there. She had come to stay with us at Delhi during her holidays in the first week of November 2012.” She told the court that she had known her daughter’s friend for two years and that he used to visit his uncle who resided in their neighbourhood. “I had talked to him on the phone prior to the incident…I even made a call to his mobile phone on the night of the incident but his phone was switched off.” She told the court that on the eve of their departure to Singapore her daughter was not able to speak and that the last time she spoke to her daughter was on 25 December. Her daughter succumbed to her injuries at the Singapore Mount Elizabeth hospital on 29 December. The 23-year-old paramedical student was gangraped and her friend attacked on 16 December. Vinay Sharma, Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Thakur are on trial for the crime. A fifth accused, a juvenile, is being tried by the Juvenile Justice Board. One of the accused Ram Singh was found hanging in his cell on 11 March.
