The former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Shaktikanta Das, has been appointed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Principal Secretary, the central government announced on Saturday.

The former RBI governor will work alongside P K Mishra, a retired IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, who was appointed to the position of principal secretary in 2019. Mishra’s tenure was extended last year in June.

According to an official order, the tenure of Das, a retired IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, will be “co-terminus” with the term of the prime minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Das was appointed as the 25th governor of the RBI in 2019, a post that he held till last year before retiring. Sanjay Malhotra took over the post in December 2024.

The newly appointed principal secretary to the PM has also served as the secretary of the Department of Revenue and the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance. Das was also a member of the 15th Finance Commission and was India’s G20 Sherpa.

Das brings over 38 years of expertise in governance, having served in pivotal roles across both Central and State Governments. His work spans finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure. During his time at the Ministry of Finance, he was actively involved in crafting eight Union Budgets.
