Former Haryana minister Kanda absconding, seeks anticipatory bail

Former Haryana Minister Gopal Kanda has been declared an absconder by the Delhi police but could appear before a court today as he seeks anticipatory bail in a case where he is accused of harasssing an employee of his defunct airline, resulting in her committing suicide. Kanda, moved a District and Sessions court in Delhi yesterday seeking anticipatory bail after his aide Aruna Chadha was arrested by the police. His application is to be heard today. PTI[/caption] Kanda is seeking anticipatory bail on the grounds that the FIR registered in the case does not disclose the commission of offence under section 306 IPC pertaining to abetment of suicide and that the police is acting on ‘media pressure’. However, while the Delhi police has arrested the minister’s aide Aruna Chadha and another MDLR employee Mandeep for their involvement in Geetika’s suicide. Raids carried out at the minister’s residence were unfruitful and the minister had failed to turn up when called for questioning by the Delhi Police. Geetika Sharma, a former air hostess with Kanda’s MDLR airline, committed suicide in Delhi on 5 August. In her suicide note she alleged that she was ending her life due to harassment by Kanda and MDLR official Aruna Chaddha. Kanda, an Independent MLA who held the Home, Urban Bodies and Industry and Commerce portfolios, resigned. While the minister initially denied the allegations and said he didn’t even know Geetika, the girl’s family has released photographs showing that he knew them.   with inputs from PTI
