The Supreme Court has granted bail to activist Gautam Navlakha in the Elgar Parishad case.

Navlakah is among the 16 activists arrested in the case, five of whom are currently out on bail. Last year, the SC had allowed Navlakah to be under house arrest in Mumbai.

The case is related to a conclave of the Elgar Parishad in 2017 which inflammatory speeches were allegedly made. The investigators have alleged that these speeches led to violence the next day at the Koregaon-Bhima War Memorial on the outskirts of Pune.

In its bail order, the SC bench of Justices MM Sundresh and SVN Bhatti observed that the case may several years to complete and the court will not extend the stay on Navlakah’s bail.

“We are inclined to not extend the stay as high court order is detailed in granting bail. Trial would take years and years and years for completion. Without going at length into contentions, we will not extend the stay. A sum of Rs 20 lakh to be paid to the opposite party as earliest,” said the SC, as per PTI.
