The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday announced the schedule of the election for the Vice President.
In a press release, the ECI said that following the formal notification on August 7, nominations could be filed till Aug. 21 and voting shall take place on Sept. 9 and the counting of votes will take place on the same day.
The fresh election of the Vice President was necessitated by the a brupt resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar last month.
Under Article 66 of the Constitution of India, the Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both the houses of parliament — unlike the presidential election in which the electoral college comprises all MPs and MLAs of all legislative assemblies in the country.
In the upcoming vice presidential election, 240 Rajya Sabha MPs and 542 Lok Sabha MPs will form the electoral college — there are currently five vacancies in the Raja Sabha and one vacancy in the Lok Sabha.
The winner of the election will be decided by a simple majority.
To be eligible to contest the vice presidential election, a person needs to be an Indian citizen, at least 35-years-old, and not hold any office of profit. To file their nomination, they would need at least 20 MPs to back them as proposers and at least 20 MPs as seconders.
Votes will be cast by a secret ballot and political parties are not allowed to issue any whip to their MPs in the vice presidential election.
