As the MeT department predicted light to moderate rain or thunder showers at few places over eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, the incessant rainfall once again led to a swollen river Ganga. The river, flowing through most parts of Uttarakhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, has sparked fears of flash floods as incessant rains continued to lash the Gangetic plains. According to a report in The Times of India, the Central Water Commission forecast on Wednesday also predicted light to moderate floods in basins of Alaknanda, Pinder, Mandakini, Bhagirathi and Ganga between 10 and 12 August. In Varanasi, the temples located near the ghats were inundated with water as the Ganga was filled to its brim. Moreover, as rains lashed the city, a 60-year-old woman’s house collapsed as the sexagenarian sustained injuries.

According to _ANI,_in the last 72 hours, an increase of 1.41 metres was recorded in the water level of the Ganga. With predictions of further rainfall in the next two days, the Ganga continued to flow close to danger level, breaking connectivity between 84 ghats in the city. Several low lying areas in Allahabad also were flooded bringing life at halt. According to a report in The Economic Times, people were forced to relocate to safer locations in search of shelter as Ganga invaded their homes. Moreover, several other areas in the eastern belt of UP also recieved moderate to heavy rainfall, causing moderate floods. While the Lalitput and Mahroni areas received a maximum of 3 cm rainfall each, Naraini, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Zamania, Agra and Iglas had 1 cm rainfall each, the Met department said. In Muzzafarnagar, the maximum rainfall recorded was 2 cm on Wednesday, according to a report by Pradesh 18. According to The Times of India, incessant rains have caused the river to be filled up to its brim. The According to the CWC, Ganga continued to swell in its upstream at Phaphamau, Allahabad, Sitamarhi, Mirzapur, Ghazipur and Ballia districts. The river was flowing 3.644 mt below danger mark in Phaphamau, 4.814 mt below it in Allahabad and 4.944 mt below the mark in Mirzapur district. The MeT department has predicted thunderstorm and moderate rainfall over few places in the eastern Uttar Pradesh over the course of next three days. (With inputs from PTI)
