Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and the national capital region on Thursday morning. The National Centre for Seismology has said that a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Haryana’s Jhajjar as its epicentre.
The jolts created panic among residents in the national capital and surrounding areas, with many rushing out of their homes. There have been no reports of damage or injuries yet.
Tremors were felt in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad around 9 am. They were also reported as far as Meerut and Shamli in western Uttar Pradesh, located about 200 km from the epicentre in Jhajjar.
Delhi falls within Seismic Zone 4, indicating a relatively high risk of earthquakes. The city lies close to several active fault lines, including the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, Sohna Fault, Delhi-Moradabad Fault, and Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault, making it more vulnerable to seismic activity.

It coincides with the extension of the Aravali Mountain belt beneath the alluvial plains of the Ganga basin to the northeast of Delhi towards the Himalayan mountain,” the Delhi Disaster Management Authority website said.
