External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that India took the Kashmir ‘aggression’ issue to the UN while others made it an ‘accession’ issue.
Jaishankar’s comments came at the ninth edition of the Raisina Dialogue 2024. While responding to a question by Firstpost’s Managing Editor Palki Sharma as to whether it’s time to accept that global relationships are based on interests and not values, the foreign minister said, “That is not something new and was always the case. Look at our own example, in the first year of Independence, we put our trust in multilateralism and took the Kashmir ‘aggression’ issue to the UN, and others made it into an ‘accession’ issue, and they did it for geopolitical reasons.”
“So, the fact is, if you say, are people playing multilateralism, they always did. We’ve grown up,” Jaishankar said.
He said that no one should be against multilateralism. The external affairs minister noted that multilateralism will exist side by side with national interest.
During the ‘A Tapestry of Truths: Can the Two Hemispheres Agree?’, Jaishankar also said, “India is a bridging power to a great degree and that was reflected under its G20 Presidency. The idea of Vishwamitra (universal friend) is what India is trying to promote."
The Raisina Dialogue is an annual conference on geopolitics and geoeconomics. During the Dialogue, sessions are conducted focusing on addressing the most challenging issues faced by the world.
The conference takes place in New Delhi and is attended by people from political, business, media, and civil society backgrounds.
The conference is hosted by the Delhi-based think tank Observer Research Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs.
