Police in West Bengal have arrested three men in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a medical student in Durgapur, approximately 170 km from Kolkata. The attack, which occurred late Friday evening near a private hospital, has reignited safety concerns for women in the state. Two additional suspects remain at large.
The incident involves a second-year MBBS student from a private medical college near Shobhapur. The survivor, a native of Jaleswar, Odisha, was allegedly assaulted in a secluded area behind the hospital building after she stepped out of the campus around 8:30 pm with a male friend. Sources indicate she was forcibly dragged to the secluded spot near the campus gate.
Following the incident, local police were immediately alerted and rushed to the scene. The student was admitted to a hospital for a medical examination and is currently receiving care.
Police have launched a full investigation, detaining and questioning several people, including staff from the medical college and the male friend who was with the student. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage and the campus’s security measures.
Hospital spokesperson Sudarshana Gangulee confirmed the survivor and her male friend were second-year students appearing for exams. She noted that the incident was reported only after the female student returned to her hostel and reported losing her phone and being assaulted outside the campus premises. Gangulee insisted that since the students are adults and the incident occurred outside the boundaries, “there is no issue with institutional security.”
The case has drawn comparisons to the 2024 tragedy at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered. The West Bengal Doctors’ Front (WBDF) condemned the crime, calling it a “chilling reminder” of the unsafe environment for women and demanding a judicial inquiry.
