BSP leader Deepak Bhardwaj who made headlines for being the richest candidate in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, was today shot dead in his South Delhi farmhouse today.

According to reports, three men, driving a black car entered the premises, had an argument with Bhardwaj and shot him multiple times.

* The 58-year-old tycoon owned businesses in real estate, hotels and education sectors.

* Bhardwaj ran a school in the Dwarka area of Delhi and planned to open two more schools- one of which would be in Dwarka and the other in Dhansa.

* A resident of Lajwanti Garden in West Delhi, Bhardwaj also owned a township project in Hardwar and a hotel named the Nitesh Kunj Hotel Complex on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway.

* At the time of the Lok Sabha 2009 election nominations, Bhardwaj declared assets worth Rs 600 crore - nearly Rs.90 crore more than the next richest candidate - Khimji Patadia

* According to myneta.com , he had two criminal cases against him, relating to cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

* His younger son, Nitesh is married to Shah Rukh Khan’s sister-in-law.

* According to a profile of him in Open magazine , he started out as a stenographer in the Delhi government, before moving to real estate. He made his fortune acquiring agricultural land for corporates.

* He was also the President of the Arya Samaj.

* He contested the Lok Sabha polls on the BSP ticket, despite being a Brahmin - and was cited as an example of Mayawati’s ‘sarvajan samaj’ philosophy that aims to make the party more inclusive.
