The five were convicted by the court on 14 October. However, one of the convicts had last week pleaded for leniency citing that his four-year-old daughter was born on the day of the crime for which he had been held guilty.
During the trial, Usman had claimed that he was not involved in the crime of gangraping the BPO executive woman but he got involved as he had personal animosity with the other four persons convicted for the crime.
On 14 October, Usman alias Kale, Shamshad alias Khutkan, Shahid alias Chhota Billi, Iqbal alias Bada Billi and Kamruddin alias Mobile, all residents of Mewat region in Haryana, were convicted for the offences under sections 365 (abduction), 34 (common intention), 376(2)(g) (gangrape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) with 34 of the IPC.
The victim, who hailed from the Northeast, identified Usman correctly during the Test Identification Parade (TIP) which led to the arrest of three other accused in the case.
Usman was among the first two arrested in the case on 2 December, 2010 from his village Dhauj in Mewat region of Haryana.
According to the police, the five men abducted the woman on 24 November, 2010, while she was walking home with a friend after her shift had ended.
The abductors took her to Mangolpuri, gangraped her, and left her on an isolated road there. The five were later arrested from Mewat in Haryana. They had claimed innocence, saying they were falsely implicated in the case.
The convicts were tried on charges of gangrape, criminal intimidation and abduction.
After the incident, Delhi Police ordered all BPO companies in Delhi and the National Capital Region to drop women employees home while providing them security.
