Dera Sacha Sauda followers cremate Gurdev Singh after a meeting with police officers

Faridkot: Body of a Dera Sacha Sauda follower Gurdev Singh, who was shot at five days ago and died at a hospital in Ludhiana, was cremated at his native village Burj Jawahar Singh Wala on Sunday. AFP[/caption] Singh’s body was taken to his native village Burj Jawahar Singh Wala from Kotakpura, where it was cremated. A large number of Dera followers attended the funeral procession. Mohni, brother of deceased Singh lit the pyre. 31-year-old Singh was shot at five days ago in Burj Jawahar Singh Wala in Faridkot district on 13 June and died in DMC hospital in Ludhiana on Friday. Dera Committee member Mohinder Pal said the administration offered government job to the wife of deceased and assured to arrest the accused soon. However, he refuted reports that Singh’s family was given cash compensation. The decision to cremate the body came after a meeting by the civil and police officers with Dera committee members and victim’s family. On Sunday, Dera Sacha Sauda followers refused to cremate the body of a sect member until the accused were arrested. Dera followers had kept Singh’s body at Kotkapura demanding immediate arrest of the accused and had planned to block traffic by placing the body on the road.
