The Delhi Police Special Cell is quizzing founder and editor-in-chief of NewsClick Prabir Purkayastha on Tuesday in their office after earlier conducting raids at his premises under UAPA and other sections. Since the early hours of Tuesday, the Delhi Police has been conducting raids at different premises linked to NewsClick under UAPA and other sections in connection with allegations that the organisation received funding from China.
NewsClick: Who all are being raided? Raids were being carried out at multiple locations in Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad, during which police seized several pieces of electronic evidence including laptops and mobile phones. Apart from Purkayastha, the house of journalists Abhisar Sharma, Aunindyo Chakraborty and Sohail Hashmi, Bhasha Singh, Urmilesh and satirist Sanjay Rajoura were among those being raided. Around 6:30 am on Tuesday, the Delhi Police officials carried out raids at houses of journalists, promoters, contributors, CEO of NewsClick. Their mobile phones, laptops, or any other digital devices were seized and at the NewsClick office premises, each and every digital device are being scrutinised by the Delhi Police officers. House of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury was also searched by the Delhi Police as the son of one of his companions who lives with him and works for NewsClick. The Delhi Police Special Cell has booked the news organisation under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had registered a case against NewsClick alleging that it received foreign funding in violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). and had sought an investigation into its funding.
