According to the Indian Express report, the incident took place after a worker from the municipal corporation asked a vegetable vendor not to park his car near a signal. The police are said to have claimed that Surinder Singh intervened in the matter and began to argue with the civic workers. This led to a physical altercation in which the MLA’s driver and employee beat up an NDMC worker.

A sanitary inspector, Ram Jeevan Meena, has alleged that Singh made casteist remarks against him and his driver punched an NDMC employee named Mukesh Kumar in his face.

HT reported that Meena, along with his team, was carrying out an anti-encroachment drive against unauthorized vendors when the incident took place.

The police have registered a case against Singh, his driver and his employee under sections pertaining to causing hurt to public servant and assault, and the Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989.

Singh, however, was reported to have denied the incident and was quoted by Indian Express saying, “We never beat up anyone. There were around 20 of them, why should we beat them?”
