AFP[/caption] 29-year-old Shaloni, a BPO employee hailing from Manipur, was beaten to death in a brutal attack by a group of five or six men in south Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur area around 2:30 am on early Monday. The group had an argument with Shaloni when he was returning from work. The assailants had arrived at the spot in a white coloured car. Shaloni, a resident of Munirka, was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared dead. The ruthless attack on Shaloni stunned those hailing from the northeast. “It is very unfortunate that crime incidents against people from the northeast are on the rise. There is an urgent need for intervention by the police and government,” MP Bezbaruah, chairperson, Bezbaruah Committee, which was formed to propose remedial measures to address concerns of northeastern people in metro cities, told IANS. JT Tagam, a leader from the Northeastern Student’s Union, said, “There are many areas in the city where police patrolling is lacking. Even in the area where this incident took, police patrolling is not a regular feature.” Joint Commissioner of Police Robin Hibu said the police got a call regarding a quarrel around 2:30 am. “The police team found Shaloni unconscious. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre but hospital authorities declared him dead on arrival. A case has been registered against unknown persons. The case is being probed from all angles as there seems no sudden provocation,” he said. Another police official told IANS, “Call details of the victim’s mobile phone are being analyzed and a special team has been formed to crack the case.” The police seized the footage of a CCTV camera installed outside a shop near the spot.
